It all started with an alarm nobody came to check
The IHouse story dates back to 2013, when I had a security system from one of the biggest companies on the market installed to protect my home.
For a while I felt safe. Until the day I got a call telling me there had been a break-in. They confirmed the alarm had gone off, asked whether I was at home and, when I said I wasn't, I asked them to go and check.
The answer took me by surprise: they couldn't. Their advice was to find a neighbour or someone nearby who could go round to the house.
That was the moment I realised I was paying for a service that, in practice, gave me neither the control nor the peace of mind I was looking for. So I decided to take that on myself and start building my own solution.
The first step was a security system built on sensors, motion detection and video surveillance. What I built depended entirely on the cloud, and for a while I went down that road.
But I soon ran into new limits. Whenever the cloud services went down, I lost access to the cameras, the devices and the information from my own home. On top of that, the data was being sent to servers and countries I had no control over.
My smart home should not need third parties in order to work. That is where the philosophy that still defines IHouse today was born.
I developed a fully local platform, where automation, security and control stay inside the home itself. No unnecessary dependence on the internet. No handing your data to companies you have never heard of.
What began as a security system grew into something far bigger: a genuinely smart home.
Today IHouse builds home automation designed to give people what I was after from the very start: control, privacy, reliability and independence.
